2011 Roundup Charts: Indie/pop with laptops.

Right, so it’s almost 2012 and we haven’t even started to round up the year yet. In order to do so: the next couple of days we’ll post some of our favorite stuff from 2011. Per genre, in completely random lists of 5 songs. Hope you enjoyed the last year as much as we did.
First genre of all: Electronically induced indie/pop was all the rage in 2011. Couldn’t turn on the internet without finding some breezy, happy, and fresh pop tune. Here is a couple of our favorites:

Reptar – Stuck In My ID
To be honest: Reptar was a bit of an unkown thing for most of us here. So their first EP ‘Oblangle Fizz, Y’all’ was a big, big and welcome surprise. According to their website, Reptar has been playing since 2008 and likes to make people dance. They certainly accomplish that goal with this song. It’s completely stuck in our ID’s.

Penguin Prison – Don’t Fuck With My Money
Penguin Prison doesn’t want you to fuck with his money. That is the kind of a harsh statement that New York based producer Chris Glover wants you to hear. Although the song wasn’t written for Wallstreet occupiers, the message of the song got down to the same point as the whole occupy movement. And so, the ‘Fuck With My Money’ video was shot during one of the ‘Occupy Wallstreet’ marches of 2011. Utterly dancable and incredibly groovy this song might make you want to secretly do a little disco dance. Rather than marching up and down the Big Apple.

Foster the People – Helena Beat
When we saw FTP in February these guys were still building up and breaking down all of their own equipment. A few months later, they had gone from talk of the town, to talk of the city and now they are the well deserved talk of the world. We’re guessing they now have people to do most of the building and breaking down for them. To celebrate that: ‘Helena Beat’, a way better tribute to the band than the more heralded ‘Pumped up Kicks’.

Phantogram – Don’t Move
‘Don’t Move’ is on Phantogram‘s new EP ‘Nightlife’, which was released in November and is the 4th EP of their spacy ways. Dreamy vocals, a base of synths and a repetitive voice in the background, what more could one want? Without getting too hipster, not much.

Bombay Bicycle Club – Shuffle
The Englishmen of Bombay Bicycle Club were probably the best known band before 2011 on this list. Yet this year they went on to becoming hot property around the music world with their junior album ‘A Different Kind of FiX’ and especially with hit single ‘Shuffle’. The piano loop, the rhythmic and catchy hook, the breezy vocals and the upbeat humming. Too bad those other guys, with that weird dance, got the mainstream trademark to shufflin’ first.

Honorable Mention: This.
